The Wilderness areas closed due to the Lake Fire will remain closed until July 2017 per the Forest Service. An exception has been made for long-distance hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail.
The updated order may be found here: Closure Order. Revised Closure Map
Note that East Flats dispersed campground, and the Santa Ana River trail south of Highway 38 are no longer part of the closed area.
SGWA crews in cooperation with the Forest Service have been working on the Santa Ana River Trail over the past few months. We’re pleased to relay the information that portion of the trail south of the 38 and East Barton Flats is now open again. The trail was closed last July due to the Lake Fire.
We have also had crews on the closed portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. The Forest Service has determined the section from Whitewater to Onyx Summit is now open to long-distance hikers only. Equestrian use is not recommended.
