About

The San Gorgonio Wilderness Association is a non-profit group dedicated to protecting the San Bernardino National Forest (Southern California), including the San Gorgonio Wilderness, and to serving the public visiting the forest. These services are provided through the generous donation of time by nearly 200 volunteers and contribution of funds by individuals who  enjoy our National Forest and Wilderness areas and wish to help protect these precious resources for use by themselves and future generations.

SGWA volunteers provide the following services:

  • Lead nature walks and programs.
  • Completely staff and manage the Barton Flats Visitor Center.
  • Staff the Mill Creek Ranger Station – issuing permits and information.
  • Patrol trails throughout the forest and wilderness to assist visitors, clean up litter and illegal fire rings, and call in emergency medical care.
  • Construct and maintain trails throughout the forest.

Each year SGWA volunteers donate over 27,000 hours and have contact with over 100,000 visitors, remove several hundred trees from the trail and provide 60 nature talks and programs.

How Can I Help?
By becoming a Volunteer Ranger

Important note: The Volunteer Program is best suited to local California residents as neither the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association or the United States Forest Service offer room and board or stipends for volunteers in the program. Additionally, volunteers will need transportation to commute between their residence and the place of volunteer duty.
