the bears in the san bernardinos are virtually invisible year-round. take standard precautions, can or hang your food etc. and you’ll be fine. count yourself lucky if you see one, especially on the north side of the range.
Camped way up the end of Lodgepole on Friday night. Definitely some bear sign. Didn’t see ’em. But . . . and this was cool. Just after sunset, for couple minutes or so, we were treated to a terrific coyote howl-fest, coming from what seemed to be the lower slope of Grinnel Ridge. I haven’t seen them up there before and didn’t really think they were there.
