I wasn’t sure what direction I’d go when I headed out on the South Fork Trail this morning but I ended up hiking to Slushy Meadows and then went up the old ski route (more or less) to Charlton Peaks east side and then up the ridge to the summit. The trail is clear to Slushy Meadows and then just patches until about 9,500′. From about 9,500′ I was able to stay on nicely consolidated snow to the summit of Charlton but one could avoid a lot of the snow if they wanted. No need for snowshoes on the route I took today – no need for any gear really but I hauled the crampons and axe just in case they might be needed.
