ParticipantCan anyone comment on water availability for the Vivian Creek trail camps (Vivian Creek, Halfway, High Creek)? I got an email from the SGWA desk that said there is no water at Halfway camp, but there is at Vivian Creek camp. A recent post (3 June said there is water at High Creek, so I am at a loss as to how the middle camp can be dry if the camps above and below it are not. Any clarity on this would be most appreciated!

ParticipantSpent last Saturday at Vivian Camp… creek was flowing well enough to refill water easily. Didn’t go up any higher; had my 9 year old with me.

ParticipantRegarding how the middle camp can be dry when there is water above and below, that’s because the upper camp, as its name implies, gets its water from High Creek, which is a totally separate stream from Vivian Creek. I day-hiked to Halfway Camp on May 7th and saw no signs of water there. I was told later by a Ranger, though, that sometimes there is a small spring about 40 yards up the dry creek bed from where the trail crosses just before the side trail to Halfway.

ParticipantThe Spring at Vivian has excellent flow. Water there can be easily obtained anywhere from the spring (400′ up from the Vivian camp cutoff on the right side of trail) to the Big Falls overlook. Quite lush still. Halfway is bone dry. Many folks were going up to High Creek and filling up as to walk down hill with the water.

ParticipantOn June 21, 2021. (today) water was flowing good at the source near Halfway Camp on the Vivian Creek Trail. Before you head up the little hill to the juntion to Halfway Camp the creek is dry where it crosses the trail but it is flowing upstream. Just follow the creek drainage less than 1/2 mile upstream. Plenty of flow to fill bottles. Approximate location of flowing water: https://caltopo.com/m/P749
As always water is flowing right along the trail at Vivian and High Creek Camps.

ParticipantDid an overnighter at halfway camp Friday June 25th. There was good water flow at Vivian creek campground and at high creek. None at halfway.

ParticipantYou must not have checked the spring near Halfway Camp. There may not be water at Halfway Camp, but there is water near it. See my previous post regarding the location. If anyone checks the spring and finds it dry, please report but it was flowing good on June 21, 2021.

ParticipantI hiked Vivian Creek to Mount San Gorgonio today. Water flowing good at Vivian Camp and High Creek Camp. There is not enough water flowing at the spring near Halfway Camp to fill bottles and pooled water is mosquito infested; so, don’t count on that water source.

ParticipantReading comments from this topic, last one on 7/8; is it safe to expect good water flow at High Creek Camp for Saturday 7/17? Planning to take West Dobbs Ridge to Jepson then to San G. Will need to refill on the way back down on Vivian Trail. Thank you.
