There is a detailed CalTopo map created by Hikin Jim that has the GPS coordinates of the spring. Plus a lot of other cool stuff. We have a link to it under Trails – Wilderness Trip Planner – Water Sources. Take a look.
Trail crew did a project to clear that not long ago. Maybe someone who’s been up there in the last month will comment. I was told that if there’s even a little breeze there is tons of ash floating around, not particularly healthful.
When the Forest Service makes an official announcement that the forests are open again, we will open up the permit app.07/06/2021 at 7:43 am in reply to: No Summit option for Fish Creek/ Aspen Grove Trailhead Permit #5448
Hi all, sorry about the summit option/Fish Creek trail issue. We’re looking at it. Our permit app guy is doing cool things this summer so it may be a little while before we can capture him again and put him back to work. In the meantime, as Shawn said, you can pick another trailhead that does have the Summit camp as an option.
To address Ted S.’s comment, the Summit camp is a camp just like Lodgepole or High Creek, you don’t have to have yet another permit.
Sorry guys, I missed this post in the “pending” stack. But it’s all still there, that’s the magic of virtual…
The Wilderness is closed. Based on how long it took to reopen after the Lake fire in 2015, I don’t see it reopening any time soon.
Sorry Chris I should have checked this thread earlier.
This question comes up from time to time, so here’s a link to the Forest Service site. Bottom line: drones are not permitted in Wilderness areas.
You need an Adventure Pass, which must be purchased before you arrive. There is no method to pay for an Adventure Pass at the trailhead. The Adventure Pass is required where there are “facilities” for the public, which is true for South Fork. You can learn more about it at this link: Adventure Pass05/21/2020 at 3:29 pm in reply to: Water source and trail conditions to Dollar lake and to the peak #4099
As of May 18, there is water at Dollar and the spring is flowing nicely; the snow is melting fast.
Sorry about that Mike, it should be there now.
The road up to Aspen Grove and Fish Creek is still closed for logging operations due to the Lake Fire. But the trails are open, you’ll just have to hike a mile or so up to the trail head.
