Warning: Wilderness Trails
Winter weather conditions now apply. BE PREPARED. Carry winter gear, including extra clothes and emergency items like a flash light & extra batteries for your phone. Ice will begin to be prevalent, you may need crampons, snow shoes, and an ice axe. Do not hike past your limits. Many people think they can hike as far in the snow as they can normally, not so!!
Remember if it’s nice and sunny down the hill we will still have snow and winter conditions. Links for current weather and trail conditions are located on the sgwa.org/wilderness permit web site. Also Cal Trans road conditions will let you know about chain requirements and road closures. The current Forest order prohibits using vehicles on Forest Roads and you are not allowed to park on residential or private property.
The Fish Creek Road 1N05 and Heart Bar road 1N02 have been closed for the winter. So hiking into that area would mean a 3 mile hike to the aspen grove trailhead and there is no parking on hwy 38 where you would start.
Please note we have had several rescues by Search and Rescue teams caused by people following maps that are downloaded from the internet or forum groups. These trails are not easily identifiable and if you are not able to use map and compass they are dangerous. Please use a paper map. The Tom Harrison San Gorgonio Wilderness map is one of the best (you can obtain at REI, Mill Creek Visitor Center or online at SGWA.org.) and stay on designated trails.
